Welcome to Cosmonarchy - a new vision of RTS, and the most ambitious conversion for Starcraft: Brood War!

Created by Pr0nogo, Veeq7, and iquare, with a healthy amount of help from the community behind The No-Frauds Club, this project totally reshapes the landscape of Starcraft in order to flesh out and understand what our own real-time strategy games could be like.

The scale of Cosmonarchy, from its battlegrounds to its techtree changes, has not been seen before in Starcraft content (or even the RTS genre in general), and has proven to be one of the project's most memorable and defining traits.

Welcome back, Cosmonarchs!

The Cosmonarch's Compass - May, Week 4


We're almost to the end of May, and that means it's just about time to cover the results and highlights of the May Royal Invitational!

Additionally, there are a bunch of changes that we're very eager to talk about, and more still in the pipe for the next major update. You'll read all about them in this installment of our weekly devlog.

COMPETITIVE FOCUS: MAY ROYAL INVITATIONAL

It was indeed quite epic.


This past weekend saw the advent of the May Royal Invitational, where at long last we saw respected newcomers like Eud64 (πŸ‡»πŸ‡ͺ Terran), ECalipso (πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ Protoss), Krankendau (πŸ‡±πŸ‡Ή Zerg), and HitEmUp (πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Random) take to the stage for their tournament debuts!

Saturday kicked off proceedings, with Group A showing strong macro across the board, and strategic victories in both PvZ and ZvZ! Art_Of_Turtle (πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Zerg) was the only returning name in his group, and he had some stiff competition with ECalipso's storm drops and Krankendau's Larvosk-fueled openers.

Group B closed out the day with some intense action between Neblime (πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί Protoss) and The Shambler (πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Protoss), a rematch of Acropolis #1's grand final! Also present was benno (πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ Zerg). He gave it the good college try!

HitEmUp holds on for dear life against newcomer ArbuzBudesh in one of the tightest games ever played!


Sunday saw day 2 of the tournament, and Group C was a barn-burner! One game had to be replayed due to issues with a player's internet connection, marking the only time the tourney saw any technical hiccups -- and even despite that circumstance, the group had some very exciting matches. HitEmUp was able to show off some potent Protoss strategies, Hamster (πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί Random) threw caution to the wind with Terran bio, and newcomer ArbuzBudesh (πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ Protoss) shocked the whole community with his Ecclesiast predilection. Great games!

We finished things off with Group D, and we may very well have saved the best player for last. Eud64 took to the stage, but despite being the clear favorite, he was taken close by TheNightFox (πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Zerg) and had to go through the motions to put jakulangski (πŸ‡΅πŸ‡­ Zerg) in his place. Some very aggressive plays were made, and the outcomes of some of these matches may surprise you!

While that's all for our current upperclass tournaments, you can expect some more newcomer-friendly content -- including an introductory stream by Neblime and an underclass invitational -- to be announced and broadcasted over the next few weeks.

With so much effort spent on preparing for and broadcasting the tournament, here are a few odds and ends worth recapping!

More melee maps continue to come on in. Mappers like Btyb, The Shambler, and JujiK are continuing to outfit us with additional battlegrounds, and we couldn't be happier to spend time playtesting them! We have another game night scheduled this Saturday, where FFAs, team games, and customs will be played. Hop into our discord if you wanna play with us!

Just before the May Royal Invitational began, lead designer Pr0nogo created a patch preview video summarizing and explaining the myriad changes in Cosmonarchy's latest release. You can watch that video here!

As was foretold by the previous installment of The Cosmonarch's Compass, the Terran cornerstone Reclamation has been revised. Its exact specifications are still evolving on the prerelease game build, but you can play around with it now and leave your feedback!

Toll the bell...


The Madrigal has been ripping Zergs apart as of late, and tweaks to its Furia Missile weapon have already been made. You can expect to see additional changes to the Terran arsenal in the near future, including some revisions to the Valkyrie and the Salamander. Player testimonies are always welcome when assessing unit satisfaction, and we feel that the aforementioned spacecraft haven't felt satisfying in some time. Expect some interesting synergies as a result of their impending updates!

Protoss tier 3 robotics WHEN?!


Work continues on new Protoss concepts! In addition to those teased above, the Xenolith -- a structure slated to share the Didact's Dimensional Recall ability -- will likely be deployed in the next week.

The previously-discussed tweaks to the Valkyrie and the Salamander are also being considered, while the Azazel is likely to be adjusted in a more distant update.

Some overlays, including several Protoss effects, are being tweaked very soon.

Pr0nogo has been focusing on visual updates in recent days, adding a birth animation for the all-new Sasyrvoleth and some morph animations for a slew of lower-tier Zerg. Once those are fully operational, there is work to be done on buff and debuff overlays to improve at-a-glance readability.

Coupled with progress on new Protoss units and structures, and the continued tweaks to game balance, next week's update should be hovering at a nice medium size!

The traditional campaign screen is inactive currently. You can play our campaign content by clicking on 'play custom' and navigating to the campaigns folder. I recommend using prerelease for the next week.

Man, this project looks impressive!

I just wish I could be good enough at StarCraft to be able to enjoy it... I do not mean it as a criticism, but I feel intimidated just looking at the new tech trees. x_x

The AI is pretty competent compared to most RTS AI, so it'll train you up pretty quick. We are also working on tutorial content, and have been adding more co-op scenarios over time. Plenty of ways to learn!

It's can be ruff for a new player. I was battling so much since the AI is extra hard now. The new mechanics are cool, but there is a steep learning curve.

Alas, I have made my peace with the fact that I just do not have the nerves to handle most real-time strategy games.

Starcraft generally is a tough game on new players. This mod takes everything about Starcraft up a notch. The best thing to do is actually play multiplayer. You should join the discord server and ask people to try and train you in aspects of the game. It would be tough, but it is doable. You might be missing something you could really get hooked on.

I am just trying to making sure he doesn't give up on the game thats all, its a great game. You don't have to be a scrub about it.
